Applying for DSS made simple
1. Check if You’re in the Ballpark (Eligibility)
Before you dive into the paperwork, you'll want to make sure you qualify. Generally, eligibility is based on three things:

Income: As of late, New York expanded these limits. For a family of four, you could potentially make up to approximately $99,250 (or even higher depending on current state adjustments to the State Income Standard) and still qualify.

Need: You usually need a "valid reason" for care—like working, being in an approved training/education program, or if you’re a teen parent finishing high school.

The Kids: Typically, the program covers children from 6 weeks up to 12 years old (or up to 18 if they have special needs).
2. Choose Your Application Method
You’ve got a few ways to get this done, depending on how much you like (or hate) the internet:

Online (The Quickest Way): New York State now has a centralized Child Care Assistance Application (CCAA) portal. You can create an account, save your progress, and upload documents directly.

By Mail: You can call the Nassau DSS Daycare Unit at (516) 227-7976 and ask them to mail you an application packet.

In Person: If you’re a "face-to-face" person, the office is located at:

3. Gather Your "Proof"
DSS is big on documentation. To avoid a back-and-forth headache, have these ready:

ID: Driver’s license or passport for you; birth certificates for the kids.

Residency: A lease, mortgage statement, or a utility bill showing your Nassau County address.

Income: Your last 4–8 weeks of pay stubs, tax returns, or a letter from your employer stating your hours and pay rate.

Your Schedule: Proof of your work or school hours so they can see exactly when you need the child care.
4. What Happens Next?
Once you submit everything, you’ll usually be contacted for an interview (sometimes over the phone) to verify your details. If you're approved:

Approval Notice: You’ll get a letter telling you if you’re covered and if you have a "Family Share" (a small co-pay you pay directly to the provider).

A quick tip: If you are already receiving other benefits like SNAP or Medicaid, the process is often faster because they already have most of your info on file. Just mention that when you start the application!
